Thanksgiving 2010

Thanksgiving Eve:
During day Noah and I spent some time crafting. Here is his turkey puppet that we made together (we ran out of hands/feathers and by the time we realized we needed more, when we were gluing the last of them on, he was not interested enough in it for me to help him make some more)

We spent the evening at Mom and Dad Benson's house. They did the traditional meat and cheese tray, veggie tray, cheese ball, crackers, chips, and homemade rolls. It was yummy as usual! It was great to spend time with the family!

Thanksgiving Day:
We went to my mom's house around 12:30 for Thanksgiving dinner. It was great to spend time with that side of the family as well as we don't see them often! Stephen's parents and his little sister Emily also came along, which was fun.
After dinner we hung out for awhile and just relaxed. Here picture proof of the relaxing part ;) ..

My assignment this year was to bring savory carrots and lemon meringue pie. Stephen ended up making the carrots because I didn't have enough time that morning to do both. Carrots turned out great, the pie not so much. Sad to say that the pie situation was so eventful it's pretty much the only pictures I got on Thanksgiving (well that and the day just went so quickly I forgot to get the camera out much.)

So, let me tell you about the pie or really the pie crust..
I knew that I had pie pans somewhere, but could not find them for the life of me in my baking dishes, so I decide to use a cake pan that I think I can make work. The pie crust seemed ok but not great stretched across the pan, so I put it in to bake not thinking or realizing that while baking it's going to pull back/up. When I pulled it out of the oven all I could do was laugh because it was barely up over the sides in some places and it looked horrible.. you will see. ;)
We were set on just stopping and buying a pie now because you can't have a good pie with an ugly, ruined pie crust. I was searching for something to take the carrots in and low and behold I find my GLASS pie pans (all this time I was looking in my cake pans/cookie sheets). I decide that I will attempt to make another pie crust.
I think it's going well, is stretched out far more over the pie pan than the cake pan HaHa, and it doesn't look half bad. This time when I go to check on it I realize I forgot to make sure the crust was down against all sides of the pan, and I forgot poke holes in it, I was in too big of a hurry to put it in the oven..oops, so I poke holes in it and hope it isn't completely ruined, although it was mostly baked (not against any of the sides really mind you). When I pull it out of the oven I just want to cry. It's not horrible, but not what I was hoping for. So in the end we leave with no pie, and we're now running late so we don't stop and get one (but we had plenty of other pies!). I am just not a good baker I guess HaHa.

After we got home, looking at the 2nd pie crust, it really wasn't that bad. It wasn't all nice and pretty, but it would have worked just fine, so I was a little bummed out again because I was really wanting to make a pie and take it in the first place.

Guess I'll just have to practice before next year! ;)

Here are the two pie crusts in all their not-so-glorious glory:
(Noah still liked my pie crust, even if it was ugly it still tasted good HaHa -can't even take credit for that though b/c it was a mix I bought from the store)
Pie crust #1

Pie crust #2

We ended that night over at Benson's house for another Thanksgiving dinner, as Scott (Stephen's little brother) had to work during the day. Needless to say we definitely got our fill of Thanksgiving dinner!

I'm so thankful that we were able to spend the day with our family. They are definitely at the top of the list of things that I am thankful for! I was going to make a list of things I am thankful for, but really it would be extremely long, all in all I am just very thankful to have a lot to be thankful for! :)

Ugh I know exactly how you feel with the pie crust. I made pumpkin pie bars and offered to make homemade rolls the day before Thanksgiving. Note to self- that takes all damn day! I made 3 batches of rolls, the first 2 I wouldn't dare give to anyone but Kyle ha ha. Finally on the last batch I knew what I was doing, and they turned out perfect-then I realized I forgot the salt. I have pregnancy brain...and I'm not pregnant. Glad you had a good Thanksgiving, I missed you!
